Zadig & Voltaire
Zadig & Voltaire is a French fashion brand founded in 1997 by Thierry Gillier, the grandson of Andre Gillier, who co-founded Lacoste. The name of the brand was inspired by Voltaire's novel Zadig (Destiny). Thierry Gillier describes the main character as "charismatic, modern and bold" and decides that it fits perfectly with his clothing concept. The designer fell in love with fashion from an early age and devoted her entire life to this passion. Years before the founding of the company, he also meets his lover, who is no less excited about the style of dress. Together they decide to create a fashion brand that fits their perceptions of quality and elegance. In the beginning, Andre Gillier partnered with Scottish cashmere manufacturers and in 1996 launched his first sweaters.
The confection is luxurious and expensive, made of quality fabrics. The brand combines its knitwear in an extremely skilful way with modern rock character, some models becoming the emblem of the brand - like plush boots for example.
Initially, the brand's activity was entirely aimed at women, later on men, and only in 2006 did the first proposals for the youngest appear. The range is expanding, lines for accessories, bags, shoes, watches, optical and sunglasses are being developed. In 2008, the first Deluxe Collection appeared, as well as an independent music label called Zadig & Voltaire Music.
The first boutique opened in 1996 in Paris. After 2000, the brand is spread throughout the Asian continent, from Korea to China. In 2006, the company entered Hong Kong, opening luxury boutiques in London, Milan and Los Angeles. It founded two subsidiaries in Japan and France. By the end of 2018, Zadig & Voltaire has 56 stores and warehouses, including 15 in Paris.
The first fragrance Tome 1 La Purete was launched in 2009 and is unisex. The scent is part of a partnership with a niche perfume company Le Labo. In perfumery, the brand strives to offer something different and new, always capturing the line between contrasting extremes. Perfumers who have created fragrant compositions for the brand are Nathalie Lorson, Michel Almairac, Aurelien Guichard, and Quentin Bisch.
